An update to Spider Island’s popular TeleFinder Internet and BBS server. This release offers scriptable, dynamic web pages along with substantial performance improvements to TeleFinder’s Web Server. In all, v.5.1 contains nearly 20 individual improvements, including an updated Windows client, since the 5.0 release in march of this year. Spider Island’s TeleFinder version 5.1 is the first Macintosh Web Server to provide support for network efficient HTTP 1.1 persistent connections and IP conservative Virtual Hosting. In addition, TeleFinder v5.1 has built-in support for “Server Parsed HTML,” another first among Macintosh Internet servers.
Server Parsed HTML – Tele-Finder’s Server Parsed HTML brings an extended version of “server side includes” (already available on the popular Apache, NCSA, and NetScape servers for UNIX® to the Macintosh platform. Web page authors can use Server Parsed HTML (SPML) to create web pages that selectively adjust content based on the client’s browser, computer platform, time of day, referring page and other factors.
Dynamic File Caching – Tele-finder’s caching increases server performance by up to 400% when delivering either pages or images to browsers. Telefinder’s caching lets it server files directly from memory for each request.
Using just 1 Mb of RAM for file caching, TeleFinder is serving nearly 80% of the requests from it’s cache at TeleFinder web sites.
Virtual Hosting – Telefinder’s support for Personal Web Sites has been enhanced through the use of IP conservative host identification. Each of Telefinder’s Personal Web Sites can be addressed through their own custom domain name without the need of a unique IP address or additional support software. This new virtual host support lets a single TeleFinder server support thousands of web sites, with easy set up and centralised management.
Additional Features – Tele-Finder’s combination of Bulletin Board System (BBS), E-Mail and Web Server provides the ingredients every business needs to succeed on the Net. All of Telefinder’s servers are PowerPC and 68K native and support Open Transport 1.1.
TeleFinder’s BBS provides file transfer, chat and conferencing services. The free client software for both Macintosh and Windows each use an intuitive graphical interface. The BBS supports TCP-IP and ISDN as well as modem connections. The new Windows client software now supports TeleFinder’s “View by Thumbnail” feature and has been updated for Windows 95.
Telefinder’s E-Mail includes extremely robust implementations of POP3 and SMTP. These protocols support a wide variety of Internet client software. The mail server also includes built-in routing, server to server message transfer, and external gateways.
TeleFinder’s Web Server is feature rich and efficient.
